Hello all!
As you all know, I went to Sri Lanka recently and learnt a few things about tea.
Here are some facts that i can recall:
All the different flavoured tea that you drink actually comes from a single species of the tea plant. Different processing techniques and addition of other ingredients is what makes one type of tea different from the other. Surprising right?? I always thought that like vanilla flavoured tea came from the vanilla plant while blueberry tea comes from the blueberry plant. Who would have thought! Lol!
High quality tea is made by using the bud and first two leaves of the tea plant. In fact, at the tea factory, they have machines to separate these leaves. Also, some lower-quality leaves are in higher demand in some countries. for e.g. in the middle-eastern countries. The people there are heavy tea drinkers (because tea is halal lol!).
Anyways, my trip to Sri Lanka was fun and educational. I recommend it as a suitable country for you to bring your students on a field trip. There you can find historical sites, spice gardens (ayurvedic purposes), tea plantations and factories and they can also learn more about precious stones as Sri Lanka has many of those. In fact, when I was there, my tour guide told me that he has hosted a few Singapore secondary school students in Sri Lanka. So, if you are intereted, you can contact me and I can give you his contact details. Oh and by the way the country is very clean, not like India. The toilets all very clean. I did not hesitate going to the loo there!
Bye!
